Pratibha Patil happens to be the ongoing and also the 13 th President of India. She also happens to be not only the first Maharashtrian but also the first women in history from the proclmation of Republic in India. It was on the proud day of July 25 2007 that she was swron in as the President by the Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, succeeding Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
She has been the member of the Indian National Congress or the INC from her young days and had been nominated by the ruling UPA Alliance and the Indian Left in the Presidential Election. She won the election held on July 19, 2007 while defeating her nearest rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by a margin of over 300,000 votes. But from her initial days she has been in the forefront of the State Politics of Maharashtra in the fold of the Indian National Congress. Being a trained lawyer she represented Edlabad constituency in the Jalgaon District, Maharahstra as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1962-1985.
Apart from this she has to her credit also other achivements that have added feathers to her political career. During the year 1967-72 she had been the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Prohibition, Tourism, Housing & Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of Maharashtra. From 1972-74 as the Cabinet Minister of Social Welfare for the Govt. of Maharashtra. From 1974-75 as the Cabinet Minister for Public Health & Social Welfare. The latter periods of 1975-76 and 1977-78 in the charge of Prohibition, Rehabilitation and Cultural Affairs and also in charge of Education respectively as Cabinet Minister for the Government of Maharashtra. Even from July 1979 to February 1980 she was the Leader of Oppostion, CDP in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Again from 1986-1988 she was the Deputy Chairwoman of the Rajya Sabha. From 1991 to 1996 she was the Member of the Indian Parliament representing Amaravati and also the 24 th and the first woman Governor of Rajasthan from 2004-2007.
